FIFA has removed Indonesia as the host of the Under-20 Men's World Cup due to objections over ‘Israel's’ participation, causing disappointment to the soccer community in Indonesia. Losing the tournament could harm the country's reputation in soccer, and further sanctions could be imposed. Indonesia, a predominantly Muslim country, supports the Palestinian cause and does not have diplomatic relations with ‘Israel’.

Gunmen from the West Papua Liberation Army attacked Indonesian troops who were sent to rescue a New Zealand pilot held hostage by rebels in Papua province. At least six soldiers died and around 30 are missing. The rebels killed the soldiers in revenge for the deaths of two rebels in a previous attack.
