Islam and Human Nature: The Clarity of Gender Identity Throughout History

[يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَاكُمْ مِنْ ذَكَرٍ وَأُنْثَى]
“O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female.” [Quran 49:13]

Many people welcomed former U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to define gender strictly based on biological sex in government documents, including passports. This move reversed the Biden administration’s policies, which had broadened the concept of gender identity. The decision, titled "Defending Women from Radical Gender Ideology and Restoring Biological Truth," reaffirmed that sex is biologically determined and cannot be changed, officially recognizing only two genders: male and female.

This change is not about punishing individuals or restricting personal freedoms—it’s simply about maintaining clarity in official records. However, the growing push to redefine gender identity goes beyond individuals and has broader societal implications. These ideas are often used to enforce political and economic agendas that benefit those in power.

The struggle in Western societies to define something as basic as human gender reflects a deeper crisis—one rooted in separating religion from daily life. This has led to confusion and doubt about fundamental truths. In contrast, Islam has provided a clear understanding of gender identity for over fourteen centuries. The Quran plainly states:

[يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَاكُمْ مِنْ ذَكَرٍ وَأُنْثَى]“O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female.” [Quran 49:13].

Islam also warns about the consequences of abandoning natural laws. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

«لَمْ تَظْهَرْ الْفَاحِشَةُ فِي قَوْمٍ قَطُّ حَتَّى يُعْلِنُوا بِهَا إِلا فَشَا فِيهِمْ الطَّاعُونُ وَالأَوْجَاعُ الَّتِي لَمْ تَكُنْ مَضَتْ فِي أَسْلافِهِمْ الَّذِينَ مَضَوْا»

“When immorality spreads among a people to the point that they openly practice it, diseases and afflictions will emerge that were unknown to their ancestors.” (Reported by Ibn Majah). Islam provides guidance to maintain a balanced and healthy society, protecting individuals and communities from harmful deviations.

Islam is a complete and perfect way of life, built on absolute certainty and wisdom. It offers a clear purpose to human existence, guiding people toward a meaningful and fulfilling life in harmony with their Creator.
