Press Release
The Ferry Tragedy was a Disaster Waiting to Happen!
Following the tragedy that happened at the Likoni ferry crossing, Hizb ut Tahrir East Africa wishes to convey its deepest condolences to friends and relatives who lost their loved ones. Also we wish a speedy recovery for those injured in the tragedy.
Hizb is very saddened with the transport conditions at the ferry crossing which are a hair raising experience on a daily basis including stalling of ferries and cramming of passengers in narrow areas leading to injuries and loss of property. Unfortunately, no precaution has been taken so far. All these indicate lack of proper management and poor strategies at Kenya Ferry Services and the Ministry of Transport in general. It is negligence of the highest order for the Government and the Ministry of Transport including the Ferry Services Department to wait for tragedies to occur then drag themselves to attend to public safety.
Islam teaches us that accidents occur in the realm which man has no control over. However, Islam also commands that we should be careful in our lives either as passengers or drivers. Islam also requires the issue of public safety including that of passengers to be scrutinized carefully through inspection of travelling vessels before setting off to prevent accidents. All these proper strategies will only be implemented in a Khilafah "Caliphate" state which will fully implement an Islamic system to take care of passenger safety.
