Leaked Government Documents Reveal China’s Oppression of Uighur Muslims

The BBC and Guardian newspapers in Britain have reported that leaked documents detail for the first time China's systematic brainwashing of hundreds of thousands of Muslims in a network of high-security prison camps.

The investigation has found new evidence which undermines Beijing's claim that the detention camps, which have been built across Xinjiang in the past three years, are for voluntary re-education purposes to counter extremism.

The leak was made to the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), which has worked with 17 media partners, including BBC Panorama and The Guardian newspaper in the UK.

After satellite photos and a flood of testimony from former detainees and relatives became impossible to ignore, the party insisted they were for voluntary “vocational training”.

There have been multiple accounts by people who passed through camps of torture, rape and abuse. In an apparent sign of concern about the consequences of mistreatment, Zhu’s order instructs staff to “never allow abnormal deaths”.

Inmates could be held indefinitely – but must serve at least a year in the camps before they can even be considered for “completion”, or release.

Detainees are awarded points for their "ideological transformation, study and training, and compliance with discipline", one memo says.

Even after completing their “education transformation” inmates are not allowed to go free. They move into another tier of camps, where they face a further three- to six-months’ internment for “labour skills training”.

Experts verified their language, formatting and contents. “Chinese classified documents have a very particular structure. And these documents adhere 100% to all of the classified document templates that I’ve ever seen,” said James Mulvenon, an expert in the verification of Chinese government documents. “From my professional expertise, these documents are very authentic,” he said, adding that their labelling as ji mi, or secret, meant this was more than routine government secrecy. “These are serious classified documents.”

Ben Emmerson QC, a leading human rights lawyer said "It's a total transformation that is designed specifically to wipe the Muslim Uighurs of Xinjiang as a separate cultural group off the face of the Earth."

Chinese ambassador to the UK Liu Xiaoming said "trainees could go home regularly”, including to care for children, and that “religious freedom is fully respected in Xinjiang."

The region now enjoys social stability and unity among ethnic groups. People there are living a happy life with a much stronger sense of fulfilment and security.

In total disregard of the facts, some people in the West have been fiercely slandering and smearing China over Xinjiang in an attempt to create an excuse to interfere in China's internal affairs, disrupt China's counter-terrorism efforts in Xinjiang and thwart China's steady development."

Muslims have been aware of the desperate plight of the Uighur Muslims of East Turkmenistan, despite the mainstream news generally ignoring the issue. We have seen a number of shameless leaders of Muslim countries too cowardly to confront China for its oppression of Muslims, and too greedy for Chinese money that they hope to get from deals with China.

The capitalist Western leaders have also made little protest over the mass surveillance and imprisonment of Muslims in China, as it does not fundamentally contradict their own prejudices about Islam and Muslims, or their ends-justify-the-means mentality for solving problems.

The great hope to save the Muslims of China who are persecuted for their deen cannot rely on the mercy of the Capitalists in the West or the east, for it is their own capitalism that the oppressors are simply adhering to. The lowly capitalist ideology does not guarantee any rights for its citizens other than the right to be exploited by the capitalists who are desperate to make gains, whatever the costs.

Only Islam guarantees basic rights to citizens, as all legislation is derived from the unchanging Quran and Sunnah, not the whims of powerful self-interested elites.
